Film titles ending with “: The Movie” became an interest of Gregg Turkington's during season 16 of On Cinema at the Cinema.

In S16E01, while reviewing Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie, Gregg noted that he appreciated the revival of the trend of having “: The Movie” in the title, as other films like Superman (2025) lacked “: The Movie” (unlike 1978's Superman: The Movie), potentially confusing consumers into believing the film was actually a comic book or TV show. Gregg also noted that while some recent films have told consumers in the title that it is “The Movie”, they do it by putting the name in between the words “The” and “Movie”, like The Garfield Movie and The Emoji Movie. Gregg then states that he prefers “: The Movie”.

In S16E03, Gregg and the Victorville Film Archives started offering “: THE MOVIE” stickers that movie buffs could apply onto the covers of VHS tapes and other materials, as the VFA realized that most movies should include the suffix. Gregg demonstrated this with his “Popcorn Classics” pick for the week, Ghetto Dawg, applying the sticker on it and converting the film's title to Ghetto Dawg: The Movie. The VFA intends to sell the stickers, though has also released a PDF for free for buffs to print out themselves on their website. Tim Heidecker, going by New Heidecker, was critical of the idea, asking why “anybody would want that”.

Gregg's analysis of “: The Movie” being rarely used these days is accurate, as Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie is the first time On Cinema has ever reviewed a movie that ended with that suffix. Meanwhile, films featuring words between “The” and “Movie” have been reviewed three times, and a single pick for “Popcorn Classics” has ended in “: The Movie”. Of course, On Cinema's sporadic release schedule has resulted in Tim and Gregg failing to review several recent releases that have ended with “: The Movie”, such as Plankton: The Movie, Paw Patrol: The Movie, and LOL Surprise: The Movie.
