On Cinema (podcast)

On Cinema is a movie review podcast and initial entry in the media franchise of the same name, created by Tim Heidecker with frequent guest appearances by Gregg Turkington. It focused on retrospectives of classic movies, with Tim and Gregg giving their thoughts on the legacy of each episode's movie and its impact on the film industry. Episodes focusing on newer movie releases were also posted infrequently. Episodes were posted by Tim every Monday.[1] Eventually, the show was noticed by Thing X, who helped Tim to develop it into a web video series, On Cinema at the Cinema. After the premiere of On Cinema at the Cinema, the podcast eventually stopped producing episodes.

Though many fans find it inessential compared to its more well-known video version, discussions started on the podcast carried over to On Cinema at the Cinema, including topics such as James Bond and Star Trek.

The podcast occasionally awarded movies On Cinema Gold Edition status, which was a certification stating the movie was approved by both Tim and Gregg.

The theme song to the podcast is Swing City Short, a stock track from iMovie. Starting from Podcast Episode 43: "Dirty Harry", this changed to an unknown track.

A bonus episode, which is now lost, was released in 2012 on the oncinemapodcast.com website. It was an early version of Stump the Buff, and was available for 99¢.[2]

Red Cross episodes

On October 10, 2012, Tim announced on Twitter that On Cinema would record a personalized movie review for any fan that sent in proof of a $50 donation to the American Red Cross to help with aid for areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.[3] These episodes were initially sent privately to the donator, and were not posted on any official On Cinema pages.

On December 23, 2012, Tim posted a link to an archive with every episode that was recorded for the Red Cross.[4] However, at some point afterwards, the link was taken down, and the episodes were publicly lost for several years.

On July 1, 2022, a user named stepuncle uploaded the archive of every Red Cross episode to the Internet Archive.

[META] Trivia

  • On Cinema was created by Tim out of a desire to mock the podcast industry.
  • The first episode was produced while Tim and Gregg were on the set of The Comedy, after Tim proposed the idea between takes.
