Chaplin's Soups and Subs
Chaplin's Soups and Subs was the second iteration of the Chaplin's Chili brand after it was purchased from Tom Chaplin by Levinsons Acquisitions. It was a chain of restaurants, based on the original location. Four new locations were opened, along with an expanded menu. Chaplin, unhappy with the changes, left the company, but retained his original chili recipe, along with the original location. Now unable to use the name “Chaplin's Chili,” the chain was forced to rebrand to “Chaplin's Soups and Subs.” It served a chowder, the “Three Bean Three-Alarm Chowder,” that some commented was similar to Chaplin's original chili, though employee and spokesman Hank Friedmann insisted that the two items were distinct.
The chain was the official caterer for the 4th Annual On Cinema Oscar Special and helped to sponsor the special, providing funding for Gregg Turkington's finale.
It was succeeded by Chaplin's X-Press after the original Chaplin's Chili bought back the rights to Chaplin's Soups and Subs, following a lawsuit.[1]
