On Cinema at the Cinema Season 7 Episode 5: "Pan" and "Steve Jobs"

If they called the movie Jobs, that sounds like a comedy, doesn't it? About a guy with a lot of different jobs, a screwball comedy.

Tim and Gregg explore the worlds of Pan and Steve Jobs' life.

Synopsis

Tim thanks the viewers for hanging in there during last week's episode, although he notes it was the highest-rated episode in On Cinema history. As promised, he allows his special guest, Gregg Turkington from the Victorville Film Archives, to do his Popcorn Classics segment that was nixed last week. His selection is Blue Streak, a movie about a jewel thief. Gregg calls it “one of the all-time great Popcorn Classics.”

With that over with, it's time for the movies. First up is Pan, a Peter Pan movie. Tim is glad to “finally get that origin story we've all been looking for,” which is that Peter Pan is Hugh Jackman. Gregg wondered why Peter Pan needed a reboot, but considered the movie “a stroke of genius” upon seeing it, as Peter deserved to be portrayed with Hollywood's modern technology. He says the movie “will give you a new lease on life,” and calls it “a delight.”

The second film is Steve Jobs, a biopic about the computers of Steve Jobs, who suffered from liver problems (just like Tom Cruise Heidecker Jr., according to Tim). Tim notes the similarities of Jobs' turtlenecks to Jack Decker's wardrobe in Decker, wondering if the director was giving a nod to the secret agent. He awards the movie highest marks, predicting it will become “one of the classic movies of our generation.” Gregg says the film will be in the record books for an interesting reason: it is the first biopic to use the subject's full name in the title of the movie. “Jobs” would not cut it, he says; it sounds like a comedy, so the filmmakers of Steve Jobs stumbled into making film history with their titling creativity.

Gregg gives an update on the new season of Decker, announcing that most of the first four episodes have been shot. Tim's scenes have not been shot yet; Gregg says he does not shoot in sequence, but adheres to a more traditional Hollywood shooting schedule. They stop short of revealing the new season's title; they instead show a preview of the poster, which reads “D3 DVD.”
