Johnny Depp uses classic movie misdirection in “The Lone Ranger” and Al Pacino puts in the finest performance of his career in “Despicable Me 2” as Tim acclimates to his painful post-surgery life.
Synopsis
Tim, wearing a bandage over his head and a red Hawaiian shirt, welcomes the viewers and introduces his guest, Gregg Turkington. They jump straight into the reviews without much fanfare.
The first film of the season is The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and somebody called Armie Hammer. Tim calls it one of his favorite movies of the year, and picks it to win Best Picture. A fan of Westerns, he appreciates that this film is “almost like a Western.” Gregg finds it interesting to see Disney branching out from animated movies to live action, and appreciates Johnny Depp's performance. Tim concurs, interested to see him in the role of Tonto, instead of Armie Hammer.
Before going onto the next film, Tim talks about his bandages, informing the audience that he finally got surgery for his blood clots. He thanks everyone for their support, and says that it was very “touch-and-go” and that he thought he would be “passed away.” He also reveals that his wife was against his getting the procedure, and he is now divorced. He claims his doctor instructed him not to do anything for two weeks, but he felt compelled to uphold his commitment to the show, despite the pain (which is controlled thanks to herbal supplements).
For Despicable Me 2, Tim calls it “so fun and funny,” and says kids and adults alike will enjoy it. He and Gregg both agree it was cool to hear the voice of Al Pacino, and Gregg predicts Pacino will win an Oscar.
The two introduce a new segment, On Cinema On Birthdays. Today (July 3) is the birthday of Tom Cruise, and Tim and Gregg wish him well and thank him for his long and storied career. Tim in particular thanks him for Jack Reacher.
For final segment, Popcorn Classics, Gregg brings in Two Weeks Notice. Tim is disappointed that Gregg's selection is not a Tom Cruise movie. Gregg replies he did not know it was Cruise's birthday until now. Tim notices that Gregg's tape has a strip of red tape with various letters and numbers on the bottom of the box. Gregg explains that this is his new coding system, which also serves as an anti-theft device, and walks through what the numbers mean. A little flabbergasted, Tim says his head is hurting, and needs to stop the show here.
