Adult Swim
Adult Swim is an American television network, the nighttime counterpart to Cartoon Network. Adult Swim is known for its wide assortment of shows, ranging from acquired animated comedies like Family Guy, dubbed anime like Cowboy Bebop, original animated series like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and original live-action series like The Eric Andre Show. Many of Adult Swim's originals come with an absurdist bent that is uncommon on the rest of cable television.
Following the swift absorption of Thing X, Adult Swim's lifestyle and content aggregation website, into Adult Swim's own website in 2013,[1] On Cinema at the Cinema continued on the network's website and YouTube page for years as the network's premiere movie review show. Because of his connection to the network, On Cinema creator Tim Heidecker convinced the network to air the Decker series online, eventually becoming a full network television show. Following the launch of the Adult Swim Streams, which consisted of live streaming shows such as FishCenter Live, On Cinema at the Cinema began airing on the website first starting 2017, appearing on YouTube a week later. The streams also carried live coverage of The Trial of Tim Heidecker.
In 2020, Heidecker's company HEI Inc. launched the HEI Network, and brought On Cinema at the Cinema on as the new network's flagship program, ending the show's tenure on Adult Swim.
[META] History
Adult Swim is the network that gave online comedy duo Tim & Eric their first big break, creating Tom Goes to the Mayor for the network in 2004. This was followed up with Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! in 2007, one of the network's first live-action programs and also one of its most iconic. Tim & Eric have created or produced various other series for the network since, and, with the help of Adult Swim's Thing X website, launched On Cinema at the Cinema as a web series in 2012.
During Season 11, Adult Swim ran an On Cinema fan show called Big Unhappy Family.
Tim and the network didn't always see eye-to-eye on On Cinema. Adult Swim had funded the first four Oscar specials, but later backed out of funding the 2017 special, which led to a hastily done Our Cinema Oscar Special as a replacement and a On Cinema Patreon being launched to fund later specials. Tim frequently broke character on Twitter to lament the lack of promotion for certain On Cinema events. Nevertheless, the network still continued to produce at least a season every year, while also funding programs like The Trial and Mister America. All of this came to a sudden halt in 2020, following the COVID-19 pandemic and company restructuring at then-parent WarnerMedia that led to the dissolution of the Adult Swim Streams. Almost all of the network's online originals were cancelled at once, including On Cinema. This led to the creation of the HEI Network, a new independent subscription service, that is the current home of On Cinema.
