When Oscar Gets It Wrong

Though On Cinema often praises Oscar for its wisdom in distributing Academy Awards, there are occasions in which a host or a guest may disagree with a decision Oscar has made.

List of times Oscar got it wrong

  • Gregg Turkington stated that the Academy made the wrong decision to not award Ghostbusters any Academy Awards.[1]
  • Gregg mentions that Dan Aykroyd's nomination for a Golden Globe for Driving Miss Daisy was “well-deserved” in response to Tim Heidecker mentioning the film's Oscar wins, suggesting he felt that Aykroyd should have also been acknowledged by Oscar for his performance.[2]
  • Tim and Gregg suggest that the Academy has a bias against action movies, spy movies, or movies about the Cold War.[3]
  • Gregg said that All That Jazz should've won an Academy Award, but didn't.[4]
  • The omission of John Goodman and Sir Ian McKellen from the 2012 Best Supporting Actor ballot was called out by Gregg during the 1st Annual On Cinema Oscar Special.
  • Also during the 1st Annual On Cinema Oscar Special, Gregg stated that John Travolta should have won at least three or four Oscars by 2013 but had won zero, and that Kirk Douglass also deserved an Oscar.
  • Gregg felt that Oscar “jumped the shark” in 2013 by failing to award The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with Best Picture.[5]
