Star Trek

Star Trek is an American media franchise, consisting of numerous television shows and movies. It stars the crew of the starship USS Enterprise, as they travel the stars.

There is some debate on On Cinema as to which movie in the original series of films takes place in San Francisco. Host Tim Heidecker has stated his position that he believes that Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is single film in the series primarily set in San Francisco, while his guest Gregg Turkington insists that only Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan takes place in the city.

• Podcast Episode 8: "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" focuses on a retrospective of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Gregg off-handedly mentions it takes place in San Francisco, in modern times, which Tim disputes. The rest of the episode becomes a discussion as to if Gregg is thinking of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
• Podcast Episode 36: "300" features Jordan Hoffman, a writer for StarTrek.com, as a special guest. Tim asks Jordan to settle the debate, and Jordan states that Tim is correct and that Star Trek IV is the film taking place in San Francisco. Gregg suggests Jordan may be confused due to the numbering, similar to initial confusion caused by the way Star Wars movies were numbered out of release order.
• During S01E09, Tim brings Star Trek IV as his own Popcorn Classic. He uses the synopsis on the back of the tape to posit that the movie takes place in San Francisco. Gregg suggests that the tape brought in is a pirated copy, due to the lack of visible security seal, and therefore the synopsis is unreliable.
• S03E07's installment of On Cinema On Location took Gregg to Kearney Street in San Francisco, where he compared the current-day street to stills of the Enterprise crew, attempting to prove once and for all that Star Trek II was the film shot in San Francisco. Tim refutes the claim, stating that the stills of the crew were taken from Star Trek IV, not II as Gregg claimed. He then produces a novelization of Star Trek IV, using its printed synopsis to demonstrate that the plot takes place in San Francisco. Gregg suggests that the novelization is an unofficial release that covers the first four Star Trek films, similar to how The Hobbit films have three movies covered by a single book. Frustrated, Tim then fires Gregg from the show, but brings him back a couple episodes later.
• S04E09 features a game of Stump the Buff in which Gregg is shown still images from various films, and must identify the films they come from. For the fifth and final question, with $1000 at stake, he is shown a still of Star Trek IV. He answers Star Trek II, and is marked incorrect by Tim.
